Volunteers Stories

I've had the best week of my life. 8 days ago we went on a quad bike tour out in the sticks of Siem reap and along the way we visited Chres village, which is 40 minutes away from the town centre and also has Chres school and orphanage. |

In April 2008 we started our world trip for an indefinite time. With all
this time on our side, we don't want to travel through countries only
as observers, but want to stay longer in places and help, where help is
needed. |

In January this year I volunteered at Chres Orphanage for seven weeks. I found out about the orphanage through my parents, who visited the school while on the Quad bike tour. I decided I would go over by myself and teach English. I was a bit nervous going by myself but when I arrived at the school, they were so welcoming and friendly towards me. |

I have no illusions about working with children. Children rule my family, they run amok screaming, shouting and crying. So after the usual visit to the Angkor temples, myself and my friend Kate were wondering what to do next when a poster caught out eye in a local Internet place. An orphanage was looking for volunteers....and for once it was not a big gap year company looking to bleed their volunteers of money. There was something more genuine and more needy about Chres Village School and orphanage. |

Volunteering was always something that I have wanted to do, so I was so excited when I noticed the poster for Chress Village School and Orphanage in Siem Reap. Me and my friend had spent a week in Siem Reap, at visiting all the temple. We contacted the orphanage and within half and hour, the owner Fiphon had arrived at our guesthouse to meet us. Fiphon was incredibly enthusiastic as he told us about his orphans and many students. We got taken to the orphanage across very duty and bumping road, passing the beautiful Cambodia countryside. |

In July 2009 we arrived in Siem Reap for a one-week vacation with Globe Aware. Part of the week included time at the Chres Village School and Orphanage. Upon arriving I was completely on cold feet, I was not aware that I was going to be a teacher. I am 16 years old and used to being a student. I was put in charge of the 11-18 year old students. Yes the kids found it quite funny that some of the students were in fact older than the teacher! |

Falling in love is not the easiest thing to do, except at this orphanage. We found this orphanage by a simple Google search, and we are so grateful that we decided to volunteer here in October 2009. |

In August and September 2009 I volunteered as an English teacher at Chres Village School and Orphanage after hearing about the orphanage from friends who had visited Siem Reap and seen the wonderful home of Fiphon and his family first hand. |
