Volunteers Stories
Clare Holman
In January this year I volunteered at Chres Orphanage for seven weeks. I found out about the orphanage through my parents, who visited the school while on the Quad bike tour. I decided I would go over by myself and teach english. I was abit nervous going by myself but when I arrived at the school, they were so welcoming and friendly towards me.
I had the most amazing and indescribable experience, that has changed my life. The children are the most beautiful and special children I've ever met and were a pleasure to teach. They are just ordinary children that like to joke around with you, play games, sing and dance. I loved every minute I spent with them.
During the 7 weeks I concentrated on correcting their pronounciation, conversational skills and teaching them about Australia. We played games, danced and talked. I taught both the morning and afternoon classes. I had about 12-15 students in my morning class and around 30 in my afternoon class. I would leave Siem Reap at 7am and return at about 5pm. During the time between the classes I got to know all the orphans and spend time with them. It was great just sitting and talking to each of them and learning about their life and culture.
While I was at the school my mother was very busy raising money in my home town. I was very surprised and greatful with the amount of money my town (pop. 5000) donated. I was able to buy blankets, pillows, toiletries, t-shirts and uniforms. I am still busy now raising more money for the school. I also took 100 of the students on an excursion to Angkor Wat and Baray Lake. We had the best day, I had never seen children so happy and excited. It made it worth it just to see how happy they were.
I became so close with the children, so it was very hard to leave. I miss them so much now but I wouldn't change a thing. I will definately be going back there soon. I would recommend volunteering at Chres to everyone who can. It is very rewarding and life changing.
